Summer 2007

This summer has seen a number of events and activities at the club.  Despite the persistent bad weather Mill Ride members have been out in force supporting the clubs events and functions.

Club Championships

On what was one of the better weekend’s weather wise, the 7th and 8th July, the Club Championship attracted a field of 92 with Shane Jackson becoming the 2007 Club Champion followed by Carl Riches in second place.  Jane Sly was crowned the Lady Club Champion.

Men’s Open

On Friday 3rd August the Ascot Stakes was held.  The course set up received rave reviews from all the competitors and congratulations must go to Stewart McMillan and his team for producing a fantastic test of golf.  The overall winner was Peter Godfrey from Wentworth with an excellent score of 146 for the 36 holes.

Ladies Open

The Mill Ride Ladies Open attracted its biggest field ever with 72 Ladies enjoying an excellent day’s golf and fabulous buffet lunch afterwards.  The overall winner was Bev Moss from The Drift Golf Club.  A special mention must go to Margaret Smith, our Lady Captain, for all her hard work in putting this event together.

Seniors Open

Monday 6th August saw 70 seniors compete for the Seniors Open title.  The winner was Richard Beadle from Wentworth.  This was the final Seniors Open to be organised by John Jewson who is stepping down as Mill Ride Senior organiser.  A special thank you goes to John for all his hard work over the years in building the section up to where it is today.

Lady Captains Charity Tennis Challenge

Margaret Smith & her county tennis partner Helen Matthews challenged Terry Wild & Russell Neill to a Charity Tennis match on the afternoon of 31st July at the Berkshire Health and Racquet Club.

Margaret & Helen are tennis partner and have been playing for numerous years for the County, Terry & Russell played when they were a lot younger.

The Pros managed to raise over £500 in sponsorship money with the ladies offering a £50 donation each if the boys beat them (No chance of that happening – Surely????)  The match was a close fought affair with the Boys coming back to win a final set tie break 10 - 7

COURSE REPORT

The week commencing 6th August saw the hollow coring and top dressing of all our greens.  This is essential work that will help improve the putting surfaces in the future.  Stewart McMillan, the Course Manager, is confident that members will see the benefit in September and October this year and then the on going maintenance schedule should mean that when we get in to next years golfing season the playing surfaces continue to improve and result in harder faster greens.

A winter programme of course maintenance is being put together which will see improvements made to the bunkers and some of the tees on the course.  This will be done in conjunction with Jack McMillan and will be posted on the notice boards in the autumn.

BRADLEY DREDGE UPDATE

Mill Ride sponsor player and tour pro Bradley Dredge finished tied 40th in the Deutsche Bank Player’s Championship, which was held at Kut Kaden in Germany on the 26th – 29th July 2007.  Bradley is competing in the USPGA at Southern Hills from the 9th – 12th August where he is hoping for another good finish in a US Major after his excellent performance at The Masters in April.   He is now ranked 55th in the world and lies 25th on the European order of merit.
